What a few weeks it’s been here! I’m in the middle of reading through my final proof of A Year Since the Rain before giving the publisher the “okay” to fire up the press. Reading my novel again, cover to cover, for the first time in a long time has been an interesting exercise so far. Of course, during the editorial process I was reading sections here and there, but this is the first time I’ve read the book in this form, and I am absolutely falling in love with it again. Parts of the manuscript make me nervous and uncomfortable, but not because I don’t like them. The story is supposed to feel like that sometimes, and it does.
There is a lot to be said about writing what scares you–or at least writing without fear. Writing fiction takes a real conviction. It’s a long and lonely process. But the book I wrote is one I believe in. In a lot of ways, it’s a very mature book–one that deals with themes of love, heartache, sex, despair, home, and identity. It may be a book that people who know me won’t expect, which is probably the case more often than not with writers and the people they know. Of course, we will have plenty of time to hash those things out a little later, but if you end up buying this thing, get ready to feel some kind of way. As you’re reading Alan’s story and you start to feel that anxiety or discomfort rise up in you, know that it’s on purpose, and ask yourself–honestly–what it is that makes it affect you in such a way.
I think the goal of any art should be sincerity. To that end, even though this is fiction and the story, by definition, is false, I wrote it with as much sincerity as I could muster.
Snow Leopard Publishing released my book cover one week ago, and today the book went live for preorders, so it’s been a bit of a whirlwind lately. The preorder period lasts one month, and the book is on sale for 20% off the cover price for the entire month. Please, if you are interested at all, pick up a copy during this time. Preorders are an important way to show the publisher that I am worth their time (now and possibly in the future).
If you do pick up a copy–and even if you don’t–know that I love you and appreciate your support in whatever shape it takes.
And since I like to share cool, new things with the folks that stop by the blog, here is the exclusive debut of the A Year Since the Rain book teaser trailer:
